Kaio is the signature beachfront restaurant located at Alaïa Beach Resort, positioned directly on the soft sands of Paje beach Zanzibar. We are open every single day from 7:30 AM through to 10:00 PM, operating continuously with no closures or kitchen breaks between our morning, midday, and evening dining services.
Please note: We are currently finalizing our exact GPS coordinates and map pin links with our team, and we will update this section with a clickable map shortly.
Kaio at Alaïa Beach Resort
Paje Beach, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Because we don’t shut down between services, you can drop in for a full meal, a light bite, or a coffee at whatever time fits your island schedule.
A complete morning service featuring a fresh breakfast buffet alongside seasonal à la carte options.
Our main menu, light healthy plates, and beachside snacks are available all through the midday and afternoon hours.
Our full evening menu highlights traditional wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, and our daily fresh seafood specials.
This is the final call for our kitchen and our Italian pizza ovens.
Continuous service from our beverage team, including our La Cimbali espresso program, fresh juices, and signature mocktails.
We are open all year round, including during the rainy seasons. Both our upper-floor terrace and our ground-floor sand pavilion are fully covered and sheltered, keeping you completely dry and comfortable during any passing tropical showers.
The drive straight across the island to Paje Beach is about 60 kilometers and takes between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes by car, depending on village traffic. Most guests choose to book a private taxi. When you reserve a table with us, you can always ask our team to coordinate a reliable local driver who knows the route well.
Paje sits right in the center of Zanzibar’s eastern shoreline, making us a quick trip from neighboring coastal hubs:
Most neighboring hotels can easily arrange a round-trip taxi for you if you are coming over for lunch or dinner. You can also message our team directly if you need assistance finding a ride.
The historic old town sits roughly 50 kilometers away, averaging about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes by car. Taxis from Stone Town out to the east coast are incredibly common and easy to find. We always recommend agreeing on a set price with your driver before you get into the car.
We offer complimentary, secure parking right at the main entrance gates of Alaïa Beach Resort for all of our restaurant guests. The walk from the guest car park down to our dining pavilion takes about three to five minutes through the tropical resort gardens, leading you right past our famous leaning coconut trees.
This is the time to see the quietest, most peaceful version of the lagoon. The kitesurfers haven’t started setting up yet, the water is as still as a mirror, and you can watch the traditional Swahili fishing boats sailing past the reef. Sitting on our upper deck with a hot espresso at this hour is easily one of the best experiences on the coast.
This is peak action time. The high tide fills the lagoon and the Paje kitesurfing community takes to the water. Securing a lunch table on our upper terrace around 1:00 PM places you right above the incredible colors and energy of the riding zone.
This window is built for a slow, candlelit dinner. Because Kaio faces due east, the sun sets behind the restaurant on the inland side. Instead of a sunset, you get a beautiful shift in atmosphere: our hanging woven lanterns light up, the room settles into a relaxed pace, and the ocean fades into deep evening blues right in front of your table.
This particular stretch of Paje Beach experiences massive tidal shifts twice a day. At low tide, the ocean pulls back hundreds of meters to reveal wide sand flats and local seaweed gardens. At high tide, the deep turquoise water rushes all the way back in, right up to our beachside terrace wall. Our host stand keeps the daily tide charts at the entrance, so feel free to ask about water levels when you arrive or call to book.
Zanzibar is beautifully warm throughout the entire year. Passing tropical rains arrive from April to May (the long rains) and again in November (the short rains), but our dining pavilions are built to keep the weather out so service runs smoothly without a break.
Our main wind seasons run from June to September (the strong Kusi trade winds) and December to February (the warmer Kaskazi winds). Even on the breeziest sport days, our pavilion layout ensures your table stays completely calm, comfortable, and sheltered from any ocean spray.
