The Setting at Kaio

Two Floors, One Beach, the Indian Ocean

Kaio sits directly on the white sands of Alaïa luxury hotel in Paje, Zanzibar. Facing east across the open Indian Ocean, our architectural layout features two distinct levels serving the exact same menu. The ground floor offers an immersive, feet-in-the-sand beachfront experience, while the upper floor is a covered, open-sided terrace delivering an uninterrupted panoramic view of the lagoon and outer reef.

While the exceptional caliber of our kitchen brings guests to Kaio for the first time, it is the setting that brings them back for a second, third, and fourth visit. Paje lagoon is a living, shifting landscape; what you see from your table transforms completely from hour to hour, shaped by the path of the sun, the season’s winds, and the dramatic rise and fall of the tides.

The Ground Floor

Barefoot on the Sand

Seating on the ground floor is strategically partitioned into three distinct comfort zones:

The ground floor of Kaio is designed to disappear into the natural landscape rather than compete with it. Handbuilt using a meticulous blend of local East African hardwoods, stone, and traditional palm thatching, the architecture references both native Swahili coastal construction and the disciplined layout of high-end Italian beachfront restaurants.

The Main Dining Room

Shaded, cool, and structured with generous tables optimized for multi-generational families and small travel groups.

The Outer Terrace

A firm, level deck positioned at the absolute edge of the beach layout, just a single step away from the open sand.

The Sand Tables

A dedicated collection of standalone tables placed directly into the fine white sand for guests who prefer to dine entirely barefoot.

The Ground Floor Experience

This level provides the classic, tactile Paje beach experience. You can hear the close, rhythmic lap of the water, watch colorful kitesurfers track across the shallows just a few hundred meters away, and enjoy a space where children can safely play in the sand under direct parental supervision.

In the evening, the atmosphere softens dramatically. The ground floor shifts to low-key ambient illumination – lit purely by tabletop candles, hanging lanterns, and the natural path of the moon. This makes the sand-floor tables an exceptional choice for slow, quiet, highly atmospheric romantic dinners.

The tides on Zanzibar’s east coast are remarkably dynamic. At low tide, the ocean recedes hundreds of meters, exposing a vast, shallow walking field. At high tide, the Indian Ocean returns completely, pushing pristine turquoise water right up to the structural edge of our ground-floor terrace. Tide charts are updated and posted daily at our front entrance.

The Upper Floor

Panoramic Open-Sided Terrace

The upper floor offers a completely different architectural relationship with the coastline. Elevated well above beach level, this space is a fully covered, open-sided terrace engineered without rigid perimeter walls.

Weather Protection meets Openness

The expansive overhead roof protects diners completely from the intense midday equatorial sun, sudden tropical rain showers, and the heavy afternoon winds characteristic of peak kitesurfing season.

Uninterrupted Elements

Because there are no glass panels or solid walls, the marine breeze moves across the entire floor completely uninterrupted, and your field of view remains entirely uncompromised.

The Seating Layout

Tables on the upper level are arranged hierarchically so that almost every seat commands a clear view of the water. The premier, highly sought-after tables run directly along the seaward edge. Interior tables sit slightly deeper within the roof’s footprint, offering a touch more shelter from heavy winds on active days while maintaining an exceptional sense of space.

Logistical Notice:

The upper floor terrace is accessible exclusively via a traditional structural staircase. There is no elevator access to this level. Guests with limited mobility or severe physical frameworks are warmly encouraged to select our ground floor layout, which delivers a completely level, beautiful, and fully accessible dining experience.

Understanding the View

The Sunset Truth

The geography of Paje dictates that our restaurant faces directly east across the lagoon to the outer reef line. Because of this exact orientation, you cannot see the sunset from Kaio. The sun sets directly behind the building, on the inland side of the property.

The famous, fiery crimson sunsets of Zanzibar are exclusively a west-coast phenomenon – found in historic Stone Town, Kendwa, or Nungwi. If a direct sunset view is mandatory for your evening itinerary, the western shore is your destination.

What We Offer Instead

What Kaio delivers in the late afternoon and evening is a different, highly sophisticated display of light. As the sun dips behind the restaurant, it acts as a massive back-light, illuminating the lagoon in front of you with striking clarity. The water shifts through a gradient of gold, jade green, and deep marine blues before settling into night. Once dark falls, the lanterns are lit, the wind sweeps across the terrace, and the lagoon transforms into a vast silver field under the moonlight. It is an incredibly peaceful, majestic dining backdrop.

The Local Fishing Boats

Connecting View to Plate

Just one hundred meters south of Kaio lies a historical, protected stretch of the Paje coastline where local, small-scale artisanal fishermen launch and land their vessels daily. This operational maritime zone is clearly visible from both floors of the restaurant, and explicitly clear from the southern tables of our upper terrace.

In the early hours of the morning, you can watch these traditional wooden dhows with triangular white sails navigate through the reef breaks to land directly on the sand. Throughout the afternoon, the beach serves as a quiet community hub where nets are mended and the morning’s catch is sorted.

This view is a beautiful reminder that beneath Paje’s reputation as a global kitesurfing hub lies a deep, enduring traditional fishing culture. Kaio works directly with these independent local fishermen to supply our seafood program, making the link between the view from your table and the fresh fish on your plate completely direct.

Tailored Atmosphere for Every Guest

For Multi-Generational Families

Kaio welcomes children across all dining zones on both levels, featuring stable high chairs and a dedicated children’s drinks and food program utilizing pure, real-food ingredients. For groups traveling with very young children, we strongly recommend a ground floor reservation. This keeps you clear of the staircase, close to the main facilities, and positions your table immediately adjacent to the open sand where children can play within your direct line of sight.

For Couples & Celebrations

Whether you are marking an anniversary, an engagement, or a milestone vacation, Kaio provides an exceptional setting. For an energetic, memorable lunch, book a seaward edge table on the upper floor during peak kitesurfing hours. For an intimate, romantic dinner, request a candle-lit sand table on the ground level to enjoy the immediate proximity of the high-tide waves. Please note your celebration at the time of booking so our hosting team can prepare your placement layout intentionally.

For Solo Travelers

Kaio is highly accommodating for individual diners. We feature an open, alcohol-free counter bar layout on the ground floor with views into the active kitchen pass. Alternatively, the upper floor during breakfast or mid-afternoon offers a tranquil, spacious setting to enjoy a proper La Cimbali espresso alongside a book, framed by a panoramic view of the outer reef.
